Sprint 20 Review and Completed Prototype Demonstration for All Stakeholders

We just completed Sprint 20, which aligned with our completed prototype demonstration to the comprehensive stakeholder group. Our team wrapped-up all items on the Product Backlog during the project PoP and accomplished the following specific tasks over the past 2 weeks:

  • Documentation
    • Continued Technical Manual development and Install Manual updates
    • Drafted release notes
  • Development
    • Complete VA Sandbox configurations
    • Supported System Test
  • Test
    • Conducted final system test; documented findings

Yesterday on Wednesday, 2/20 our team presented an additional demonstration to an executive group of stakeholders from the VACI, VA OIT Management, MHV, etc. and received great praise not only on the capabilities we developed, but for how our team was instrumental in involving such a wide range of stakeholders who contributed to the success of the prototype.

With this in mind, PwC and Harris are pleased to announce that we have exercised a no-cost, 1 month extension with the VA to continue development and keep the team in tact while we explore with the VA additional follow-on work geared towards Production implementation. During this time we will continue our Sprint Review meetings; the next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, 3/7 at 10am EST. [Note: approved deliverables will be updated to the VA SharePoint repository at the beginning of March.]

You all have been extremely influential in the prototype development, and our team is grateful for all of the time and guidance provided to our team. We know you juggle your regular day jobs on top of participating in our bi-weekly meetings, and appreciate all of the effort lent for this project.

We are very pleased to say that this solution is as much yours as it is our team's, the VACI's, the VA OIT's, the non-VA providers', and most importantly - the Veterans'.

Our team wouldn't be where we are today without the help and guidance of everyone involved, and we would like to extend our sincere thanks to all of you, and we look forward to working with you during our extension and in the future!

Sincerely,

The Blue Button Extension: Medical Imaging Team

And for those of you who are recently joining our calls for Stage 2 (and may not have background for Stage 1 or what Stage 2 work has been done thus far), and just a a gentle reminder to attendees that haven't joined in a while: if you think you need an orientation/overview on the project, or would like to be caught up to speed, please reach out to us via email and we'd love to set up a meeting with you.

For our immediate new joiners who haven't received any background and are attending Sprint Reviews for the first time, we ask that you please hold your questions til the end of the call, or reach out to us directly outside of Sprint Review (Kim Cirka, Kathleen Keating, or Kevin DeOrsey - emails on the first page of this wiki). We always welcome your participation, but would like to save orientation/overview items for another time - Sprint Reviews are meant to be focused on work done during the Sprint and suggestions you, the stakeholders, may have for work to be done until the contract is finished.

Sprint 11 Review, Sprint 12 Planning

The Presidential demos we delivered on 9/26 and 10/1 were well-received by the audience. It's truly exciting to see how our prototype is influencing other initiatives and solutions, and our teams are able to work collaboratively to achieve larger, more integrated solutions -- as well as receiving so much support that the BBMI prototype is wanted in Production...well, yesterday!

Over the past two weeks, the Master Test Plan (MTP) and Stage 2 User Stories were approved, so we've finished populating the product backlog with these items. The team is still awaiting final approval of the SDD. Once all outstanding documents are approved, they will be posted to our VA SharePoint page.

In the meantime, we anticipate Sprint 12 to be a time to align with new MHV updates and the beginning of some major Direct updates.

Sprint 5 Review, Sprint 6 Planning

In Kathleen's absence, I tried my hand as Scrum Master. During the Sprint, the team encountered some unforeseen challenges with fully integrating VIX and VistA Imaging. However, we addressed these blockers and any remaining issues should be resolved during the next Sprint. At this point we expect no schedule slippage to meet our end of August deadline for Stage 1 completion. As a team, we have made great strides throughout the project and it is impressive to see how far we've come.

I want to highlight the VistA Imaging integration (via VIX) capabillity. Last week during the Stakeholder presentation we simply demonstrated static images--but this time we were able to show both report data and referential images being pulled from VistA and ViX in a live demo! The presentation was well-received by the Stakeholders and our PM. The following is a list of our team's Sprint 5 accomplishments:

  • Documentation
    • Draft Software Development Plan (SDP) - peer reviewed and updated
    • Software Design Document (SDD) updates
  • Development
    • VistA Imaging patches applied
    • VistA Imaging integration (via VIX) to retrieve image metadata, thumbnail images, and referential images
    • Correlated MDWS report data to VIX report/study data
    • Initial Preview Page designed and developed
    • PDF file size estimate displayed; file size limit enforced
    • Referential images added to PDF report
    • Initial Section 508 compliance analysis performed
    • Stage 2 Use Case description expanded
  • Test
    • Updated Selenium tests
After planning for Sprint 6, the following is a list of current objectives:
  • Key image identification
  • Resolve referential image corruption issue
  • Expand Preview Page functionality - zoom image, pagination
  • Simplified login/logout
  • Error Page messages
  • Expanding test database (report data and images)
  • Continue test development (test suites)
  • Stage 2 Use Case updates and review
Attached is the PPT provided during the session.

Sprint 4 Review, Sprint 5 Planning

As Scrum Master, I must reiterate how much of a pleasure it is to be working with such a great team of technical staff. They have all put in tremendous amounts of effort into getting us into the position we are today, and have openly addressed any blockers that may have surfaced during this time to ensure that our prototype is on schedule and that we'll meet our end of August deadline.

Just to note, in general we did encounter some VIstA Imaging environment setup issues and some time constraints that surfaced from this during this Sprint, but we anticipate that they will be resolved in Sprint 5 to enable us to work towards more of our objectives surrounding test data and images, as well as image accessibility and implementation into reports and preview displays.

This is no way should discredit the work that our team has accomplished during this Sprint as we have been able to demonstrate exceptional capabilities for the prototype; sometimes unanticipated blockers surface, and we were able to work through them as best as we could. The following is a list of our team's Sprint 3 accomplishments:

  • Documentation
    • Stage 1 System Design Document (SDD) approved
    • Review SDD for newly acquired specific design elements
    • Draft Software Development Plan (SDP)
  • Development
    • Manage test image availability with VIX and VistA Imaging
    • Design of accessing images (via thumbnail grid and preview, PDF report)
    • Design process of implementing MDWS data into Text and PDF Radiology Reports, and implement into respective report formats [Note: No new updates to report formats as the BB PHR Radiology Extract Elaboration Workgroup is sitll working towards their final formats.]
    • Finalize burning images with quality disclaimer (banner)
    • Internal preparation for Stage 2 (design and SME staffing)
After planning for Sprint 5, the follow is a list of current objectives:

  • Updating software development and system design documents as necessary
  • 'FIle Size' calculation and new column in results summary grid; check for max PDF file size
  • Implementing more extensive VistA/VistA Imaging test database (report data and images) and documenting process of accessing/inserting this data
  • Implementing process to retrieve JPEG referential images for PDF report
  • implementing process to retrieve JPEG thumbnail images for preview capability
  • Writing scripts to build/rebuild and populate VistA database with patient data for testing purposes
  • Internal preparation for Stage 2

Sprint 3 Review, Sprint 4 Planning

As Scrum Master, I am happy to say that over the mere 9 days of Sprint 3, our team has exceed expectations and has vastly improbed what we demonstrated at our last review. Our technical team members have achieved a long list of accomplishments in terms of both project documentation and development work, and have pushed us closer to completing Stage 1.

The following is a list of Sprint 3 accomplishments:

  • Documentation
    • All monthly updated deliverables (PMP, Project Schedule, etc.) and Stage 1 Master Test Plan (MTP) accepted
    • Updated Stage 1 System Design Document (SDD) and resubmitted for approval
  • Development
    • Worked on finalizing necessary functionality and process of making test images available through VistA Imaging (via vIX) and test data through VistA
    • Created MHeV homepage for the prototype
    • Default search page allows column sorting, pagination, as well as options to pull Text and PDF radiology reports
    • Completed PDF report with images
    • Investigation and implementation of image quality disclaimers on images
    • Finalized date range search page to align with MHeV (individual m/d/y selection and pop-up calendars)
    • Alignment with MHeV look/feel for all code written thus far

Some of the major discussion topics posed to the stakeholder audience were as follows:
  • Preferences for burning quality disclaimers into images
  • Image size in PDF (size/quality/etc. guidelines)
  • Confirmation of BB max file size and Veteran technical requirements
After planning for Sprint 4, the follow is a list of current objectives:

  • Design documentation updates
  • Design of accessing images (thumbnail preview, PDF)
  • Design for implementing MDWS data into Text and PDF radiology reports
  • Implementing larger VistA/VistA Imaging test database (report data and images) and documenting process of accessing/inserting data
  • Finalizing process of burning images/identifiers
  • Internal preparation for Stage 2
