The VHA Innovation Program and the Office of Information & Technology have developed the Innovation Sandbox Cloud (ISC), a safe environment rich in tools to facilitate the development of innovations. The intent of this document is to provide a guide to accessing and using the Innovation Sandbox Cloud environment. The ISC will continue to be developed and enhanced throughout the Innovation Program, and this document will be updated to reflect those changes. Notification emails will be sent when significant updates are made.

Innovation Sandbox Cloud (ISC) Rules of Behavior

The following are the rules of behavior for the ISC. Your entrance into the ISC via an Innovation Sandbox Account (username and password) indicates your acceptance of these rules.

  1. Only properly licensed software may be used in the sandbox and especially within the virtual machines issued to innovators
  2. No Live Data from a Veteran may be used within/loaded into/copied to the ISC environment under any circumstances.
  3. Any data requested to be added to the ISC that has been extracted from a real database or databases is subject to Privacy Review. Data loaded into the sandbox should be loaded via publicly facing means (ftp, web site, webdav, etc) to ensure the non-PII non-PHI test is satisfied.
  4. Unauthorized access or attempting to access the core infrastructure is prohibited. This includes firewalls, routers, switches, management appliances, storage components, and servers that are not required for your Innovation development.

Using the Innovation Sandbox Cloud

  • Connect to the ISC (https://sandbox.vacloud.us) using a browser that supports current standards in HTML, CSS and JavaScript. The following browsers are known to adhere reasonably to the web standards and thus work with the system (newer version work best) :
    • Mozilla Firefox version 1.0 – and newer
    • Safari version 3.0 and newer
    • Internet Explorer version 6.0 - and newer
    • Google Chrome version 5.0 - and newer
    • Opera version 9.5 or newer
  • You will be taken to the 'Sandbox Home Page' which displays three clickable icons 'My Page', 'Wikis' and 'Blogs'. You must logon to your account by supplying your Innovation Sandbox Cloud account credentials (username and password).
    • 'My Page' (when logged in) is a wiki dashboard which tracks real-time updates for all wikis, blogs, podcasts, web calendars and team email lists.
    • With 'Wikis' you may collaborate with online document creation, editing including images, streaming video and audio. Commenting, independent of the document content on any wiki page or blog by viewers is supported.
    • 'Blogs' allows you to publish text, pictures and podcasts in an online chronological journal which others can subscribe to for automatic notification and or content distribution int the case of podcasts.

Using 'Virtual Machines'

General

Windows

  • Launch your windows VMs directly from the VMware Horizon client
  • Special note: If you are connecting from behind the VA firewall, you will need to choose RDP as the display protocol instead of PCoIP (see below)

Mac OS

TODO

Linux

  • Linux VMs are accessible per system admin special instructions with computer name and IP address
  • As of 2015/7/6, Ubuntu Linux VMs are provisioned by Amazon Web Services (AWS)
  • Connectivity to VM
    • Connectivity is controlled via AWS routing tables. Port 22 (SSH) is enabled by default. Make a helpdesk request to configure access to other ports.
    • When connecting from a windows environment, you will need one of the following options for a graphical interface:
      • A SSH client with an X server - try Putty and Xming, or Cygwin. Both approaches have "portable" options for a non-persistent environment or when running without administrator privileges and function in WinXP.
      • x2go - this uses NX3 open-source software to implement a client and server with X11 compression. Install the x2go server on the Linux VM and then use an x2go client to connect from a Linux, windows XP and later, or OSX environment. For windows environments without administrator access, there is a windows XP and later x2go client that runs without installation.
      • A VNC server and client (where permissible) - Install a VNC server on the Linux VM and connect using a VNC client from the windows environment. VNC servers are available from the Ubuntu repos. This will require a helpdesk request to open appropriate ports. Try TightVNC as it also works in WinXP. For security purposes, use the SSH tunneling method for VNC connections
      • RDP - Install a RDP client on the Linux VM (e.g. xrdp) and connect using the windows remote desktop tool (WinXP included). This will require a helpdesk request to open appropriate ports.
        • Of special note: outbound SSH and RDP from behind the VA firewall are only allowed to approved IP addresses, therefore direct connection to this linux VM is not available without IP approval. However, connection from the non-persistent WinXP VM is available.
        • Of special note: VNC is not allowed on the VA network.
    • See this AWS support article for additional resources
  • Post-provisioning configuration

      • check that the /etc/hostname file contains just the name of the machine
      • check that /etc/hosts has an entry for localhost. It should have something like:

127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
127.0.1.1 my-machine

    • If you are provisioned a Linux server VM and desire a UI, try the XFCE environment (lighter for remote viewing):

sudo apt-get install xfce4
sudo apt-get install xfce-goodies

    • Installation of synaptic or ubuntu software center must be manually installed if desired

      sudo apt-get install synaptic

    • Installation of ttf-mscore-fonts may be required to have access to commonly used fonts. This is best done using synaptic or ubuntu software center. You must enable universe and multiverse repositories.

Android

  • When connecting from an Android environment, either:
    • Run the VMware horizon client to access your windows VMs
    • Connect via SSH, VNC, or RDP methods are described above in the "Linux" section

Accessing ‘Wiki' Collaboration Service

see https://vacloud.us

Persistent Network Drives

  • The user will have access to two persistent network drives:
    • 'H:' - Personal Home Directory [vaphsfpc1\userdir$\%username%]
    • 'S:' - Common Shared Directory [vaphsfpc1\sandbox]
  • Do not put files at the root level of the S: drive, create folders.
  • Do not create file or folder names that exceed 80 characters in length.
  • Do not change file or directory permissions.
  • These are available from any of the desktops.
  • At this point, this is the only persistent storage available in the Innovation Sandbox.
  • Any data saved to the C: or E: drive will be erased after logging out of the Innovation Sandbox.
  • The VistA database is persistent.

User Profiles

  • User Profiles are persistent. Changes such as new shortcuts, etc. will remain after logging off.

Requesting Software:

To request software additions and updates, please contact the Innovation WebHelpDesk (http://help.vacloud.us).

Caché and VistA:

Intersystems Caché

Caché 2008.2 is installed in the ISC System Management Portal (SMP) is accessible using the login information provided under 'ISC Usernames and Passwords'.

Vista

  • A development VistA database is installed in the ISC. A database populated with fictitious patient data is available and is indicated as the “CPM” namespace in Caché.
  • An updated CPM database and Caché MGR DAT files will be made available periodically as VistA patches are applied. Individual user’s VistA database will not be updated unless specifically requested by the user. NOTE: All modified routines, globals and builds will need to be saved off on the persistent network drives when CPM updates are applied as the entire databases are overwritten.
  • The account runs on broker port 9200
  • Taskman is configured to start automatically with Caché startup.
  • Terminal sessions to VistA can be established through the VistA.r2w desktop icon. The first login requested is at the Caché level (username/password = vhaino/vhaino) followed by the VistA access/verify request (vhaino321/verify123.). Upon VistA login, specify R1 to R4 as the user division.
  • CPRS, Vitals and other VistA applications are found in the desktop folder VistA_Apps. The same login is used for all VistA applications (i.e. CPRS, Vitals, etc.).

Additional Information:

ISC Usernames and Passwords

Note: most logins are case sensitive so usernames and their passwords should be entered as defined below.

  • Caché telnet (Reflection connection)
username/password = 'vhaino/vhaino'

  • Caché System Management Portal
username/password = '_system/vhaino' and

username/password = 'admin/vhaino'

  • VistA user (terminal sessions, CPRS, Vitals, etc)
username password = 'vhaino321/verify123.' (ending with a period)
